Research Ethics, Speakers and Language Communities

Research involving speakers, participants, voices, images or private communication requires appropriate ethics review and informed consent. Authors must explain recruitment, recording permissions, anonymity choices, compensation and future uses of materials.

Work with Indigenous, minoritized or endangered-language communities should respect community authority, cultural protocols, data sovereignty, access restrictions, attribution and benefit. Publicly accessible online language is not automatically exempt from ethical consideration.
