Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript is original, has not been published previously and is not under consideration by another journal.
  • The submission fits the BF aims and scope and states the biological question and contribution clearly.
  • A separate title page and an anonymized manuscript have been prepared for double-blind review.
  • Organisms, materials, controls, replication, methods and statistical analyses are reported sufficiently for assessment.
  • Ethics approvals, collection permits, biosafety requirements, funding, competing interests, author contributions and AI-tool use are disclosed where applicable.
  • Data, code, sequences, specimens and biological materials are deposited or made available as required, with accession numbers and lawful restrictions stated.

Author Guidelines

Authors should read the aims and scope before preparing a submission. A manuscript must be original, approved by all authors and not under consideration by another journal.

Types of paper

  • Research article: a full experimental, observational, field or computational study.
  • Review article: a critical synthesis that explains its coverage and selection method.
  • Methods paper: a validated laboratory, field, analytical or computational method with clear biological use.
  • Resource or data paper: a well-documented dataset, collection or research resource with demonstrated value.
  • Short communication: a concise report of a significant finding or method.

Files for double-blind review

Submit a separate title page and anonymized manuscript. The title page should include author names, affiliations, corresponding-author details, ORCID iDs where available, funding, competing interests and author contributions. Remove identifying details from the review file and its document properties.

Methods and reporting

Describe organisms, strains, cell lines, sampling, controls, replication, randomization, blinding, reagents, equipment, software and statistical methods in enough detail for assessment. Report ethical approval, permits, biosafety measures and accession numbers where relevant.

Data, code and biological materials

Include a Data Availability Statement. Deposit sequence, structure, expression and other community-standard data in an appropriate repository and cite the accession. Explain how code, protocols, specimens, strains or other materials may be obtained, including lawful or ethical restrictions.

Authorship and AI

Authorship is limited to people who made a substantial contribution, approved the submitted version and accept responsibility for the work. AI tools cannot be authors. Material use of generative AI in writing, coding, analysis or image preparation must be disclosed.

Online submissions are temporarily closed while BF completes its editorial setup. This page will be updated when submissions open.

Privacy Statement

Biotechnology Frontiers (BF) respects the privacy of authors, reviewers, editors, readers, research participants and registered users. The journal may collect names, affiliations, contact details, ORCID iDs, account information, submission and review records, correspondence and technical logs needed to operate and secure the journal.

Use and confidentiality

Information is used to manage editorial work, publish accepted articles and metadata, maintain the scholarly record and meet ethical or legal obligations. Access to non-public material is limited to authorized people who require it for journal operations.

Research information

Authors must remove personal or sensitive information that they are not authorized to publish. Human-participant data, precise locations of threatened species and other restricted biological information must be handled according to consent, ethics, conservation and legal requirements.

Sharing, retention and security

BF does not sell personal information. Limited data may be processed by hosting, DOI, indexing, preservation, email or security services required to run the journal. Editorial records may be retained to document decisions and preserve research integrity. Privacy questions should be sent to the official contact address.
