Author Guidelines

Authors should read the aims and scope before submission. Manuscripts must be original, clearly written and not under review elsewhere.

Article types

  • Original research articles
  • Historiographical and review essays
  • Archival and documentary studies
  • Oral-history and memory studies
  • Digital-history and historical-data papers
  • Research notes, source notes and short communications

Historical argument and sources

State the historical question, period, place and contribution clearly. Distinguish primary from secondary sources, explain the basis for source selection, assess provenance and limitations, and situate interpretations in relevant historiography. Quotations, dates, names, archival references and translations must be accurate.

Archives, oral history and communities

Identify repositories, collections, fonds, series, file numbers and access dates where available. Report restrictions and permissions. Oral-history and community-based research requires appropriate ethics review and informed consent, careful attention to power and vulnerability, and respect for agreements on attribution, anonymity, embargo and future use.

Images, maps and translations

Provide captions, creators, dates, repositories, shelf marks or identifiers and rights statements. Authors are responsible for permissions. Identify the edition and translator of translated sources; when translations are the author's own, say so and preserve the historical meaning and register.

Data and declarations

Include statements on data availability, funding, competing interests, author contributions and material use of generative AI. Explain transcription, coding, database construction and digital methods sufficiently for assessment.

Review files

Provide a separate title page and anonymized manuscript for double-blind review.
