Visual-arts research

State the question, context, method and contribution clearly. Practice-led work should explain how studio process, materials, documentation and critical reflection support the argument. Historical studies should identify artworks, artists, dates, collections, archives and provenance accurately.

Images and documentation

Supply clear images with captions, creator, title, date, medium, dimensions, collection or location, photographer and rights information where relevant. Describe significant cropping, colour adjustment, reconstruction or composite imagery. Files should be suitable for editorial assessment and accessible to readers.

Ethics and permissions

Obtain permission for protected artworks, photographs, archival material and substantial extracts not covered by a lawful exception or licence. Research involving artists, participants, communities, culturally sensitive material or restricted collections requires appropriate ethics review, consent and observance of cultural protocols.

Review files

Provide a separate title page and anonymized manuscript for double-blind review. Disclose funding, competing interests, author contributions and material use of generative AI.
