  • The manuscript is original, has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The submission fits the IJVA aims and scope and states its contribution to painting or visual-arts research clearly.
  • A separate title page and an anonymized manuscript have been prepared for double-blind review.
  • Artworks, artists, dates, media, dimensions, collections, sources and methods are identified accurately.
  • Image quality, captions, credits, accessibility, copyright permissions, ethics, consent and cultural protocols are addressed where applicable.
  • Funding, competing interests, author contributions, research-material availability and material AI-tool use are disclosed.

Author Guidelines

Authors should read the aims and scope before submission. Manuscripts must be original, clearly presented and not under review elsewhere.

Article types

  • Research articles
  • Critical and historical studies
  • Practice-led and studio-research papers
  • Technical and material studies
  • Exhibition, collection and archival research
  • Review articles, case studies and short communications

Visual-arts research

State the question, context, method and contribution clearly. Practice-led work should explain how studio process, materials, documentation and critical reflection support the argument. Historical studies should identify artworks, artists, dates, collections, archives and provenance accurately.

Images and documentation

Supply clear images with captions, creator, title, date, medium, dimensions, collection or location, photographer and rights information where relevant. Describe significant cropping, colour adjustment, reconstruction or composite imagery. Files should be suitable for editorial assessment and accessible to readers.

Ethics and permissions

Obtain permission for protected artworks, photographs, archival material and substantial extracts not covered by a lawful exception or licence. Research involving artists, participants, communities, culturally sensitive material or restricted collections requires appropriate ethics review, consent and observance of cultural protocols.

Review files

Provide a separate title page and anonymized manuscript for double-blind review. Disclose funding, competing interests, author contributions and material use of generative AI.

Submission status

Online submissions are temporarily closed while IJVA completes its editorial setup.
