Philosophical Research Ethics and Responsible Engagement

Most purely argumentative work does not involve human-participant research. When a study uses interviews, surveys, experiments, classroom activities, personal correspondence or identifiable case material, authors must report appropriate ethics review, consent and privacy safeguards.

Authors should represent people, communities and intellectual traditions accurately and respectfully. Criticism should address arguments and evidence rather than identities. Work with Indigenous, religious or culturally situated knowledge must observe relevant protocols, custodial rights and restrictions.
