Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript or practice-led submission is original, has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The submission fits the CPR aims and scope and states its contribution to photography research clearly.
  • A separate title page and an anonymized manuscript have been prepared for double-blind review.
  • Photographers, subjects, dates, processes, captions, collections, sources and methods are identified accurately.
  • Image quality, editing disclosure, accessibility, copyright permissions, ethics, consent and sensitive-location safeguards are addressed where applicable.
  • Funding, competing interests, author contributions, research-material availability and material AI or synthetic-image use are disclosed.

Author Guidelines

Authors should read the aims and scope before submission. Manuscripts and practice-led submissions must be original, clearly presented and not under review elsewhere.

Article types

  • Research articles
  • Critical, theoretical and historical studies
  • Practice-led and visual-research papers
  • Documentary and community-based photography studies
  • Technical, archival and conservation studies
  • Review essays, interviews, case studies and short communications

Photographic research

State the research or creative question, context, method and contribution clearly. Practice-led work should explain how image-making, selection, sequencing, editing and reflection support the argument. Identify photographers, subjects, dates, processes, collections, archives and publication histories accurately.

Images, captions and editing

Provide publication-quality images with captions, creator, title, date, process or medium, source, collection, photographer and rights information where relevant. Disclose cropping, retouching, compositing, colour alteration, staged reconstruction and synthetic content when these changes affect interpretation. Documentary or evidentiary images must not be altered deceptively.

Ethics, consent and permissions

Research involving identifiable people, vulnerable communities, private places, sensitive events or culturally restricted material requires appropriate ethics review and consent. Consider dignity, safety, power, representation and the future circulation of images. Authors must obtain permission for protected photographs and archival material not covered by a lawful exception or licence.

Review files

Provide a separate title page and anonymized manuscript for double-blind review. Disclose funding, competing interests, author contributions and material use of generative AI.

Submission status

Online submissions are temporarily closed while CPR completes its editorial setup.

Privacy Statement

Contemporary Photography Review (CPR) respects the privacy of authors, reviewers, editors, readers, photographers, image subjects and registered users. The journal collects only the information needed to manage submissions, review, publication, security and the scholarly record.

People, communities and locations

Authors must not publish identifiable, private or sensitive images without appropriate authority and ethical justification. Photographs of children, vulnerable people, private spaces, medical settings, conflict, trauma, sacred practices or restricted communities require particular care. Location metadata should be removed or generalized where disclosure could create risk.

Sharing and retention

CPR does not sell personal information. Limited data may be processed by services needed for hosting, DOI registration, indexing, preservation, email and security. Editorial records may be retained to document decisions and protect research integrity.
