Manuscript Preparation

Authors should read the aims and scope before preparing a submission. A manuscript must be original, approved by all authors and not under consideration by another journal.

Types of paper

• Research article: a full observational, theoretical, computational or experimental study.
• Review article: a critical synthesis that explains its coverage and selection method.
• Methods or instrumentation paper: a validated technique, instrument, pipeline or calibration with clear scientific use.
• Technical report or mission study: a focused account of a facility, mission, survey or engineering result with broader relevance.
• Short communication: a concise report of a significant result or method.

Files for double-blind review

Submit a separate title page and anonymized manuscript. The title page should include author names, affiliations, corresponding-author details, ORCID iDs where available, funding, competing interests and author contributions. Remove identifying details from the review file and its document properties.

Scientific reporting

State the research question, observations or simulations, sample selection, calibration, uncertainty treatment, software and statistical method. Give coordinate systems, epochs, time standards, units and object identifiers where relevant. Conclusions must remain within the limits of the evidence.

Data, software and images

Include a Data and Code Availability Statement. Cite archives, catalogues, software and data releases with persistent identifiers where available. Explain any lawful restriction on access. Image processing should be documented when it affects scientific interpretation; composites and representative-colour images must be labelled.

Authorship and AI

Authorship is limited to people who made a substantial contribution, approved the submitted version and accept responsibility for the work. AI tools cannot be authors. Material use of generative AI in writing, coding, analysis or image preparation must be disclosed.
