Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The manuscript or practice-research submission is original, has not been published previously and is not under consideration elsewhere.
  • The submission fits the MPAR aims and scope and states its music or performing-arts contribution clearly.
  • A separate title page and an anonymized manuscript have been prepared for double-blind review.
  • Works, performances, practitioners, sources, methods and media documentation are identified accurately and sufficiently for assessment.
  • Ethics approval, consent, performer and community rights, cultural protocols, accessibility, licences and permissions are addressed where applicable.
  • Funding, competing interests, author contributions, media availability and material AI-tool use are disclosed.

Author Guidelines

Authors should read the aims and scope before submission. Manuscripts and practice-research submissions must be original, clearly presented and not under review elsewhere.

Music and performance research

State the research or creative question, context, method and contribution clearly. Identify works, performances, practitioners, communities, venues, recordings, editions and archives accurately. Practice-research submissions should explain the relationship between creative process, documentation, reflection and scholarly argument.

Media and documentation

Describe audio, video, scores, scripts, images, movement notation, software and other documentation sufficiently for assessment. Provide stable links or supplementary files where permitted, with captions, credits, accessibility information and technical specifications.

Ethics, communities and consent

Research involving performers, audiences, interviews, workshops, community knowledge or culturally restricted practice requires appropriate ethics review and informed consent where applicable. Respect performer rights, community protocols, cultural ownership, privacy, safety and the right to withdraw.

Rights and permissions

Authors must secure permission for copyrighted scores, lyrics, scripts, photographs, recordings, choreography, designs, archival material and substantial extracts not covered by a lawful exception or licence. Identify third-party rights clearly.

Review files

Provide a separate title page and anonymized manuscript for double-blind review. Disclose funding, competing interests, author contributions and material use of generative AI.

Submission status

Online submissions are temporarily closed while MPAR completes its editorial setup.

Privacy Statement

Music and Performing Arts Review (MPAR) respects the privacy of authors, reviewers, editors, readers, performers, participants and registered users. The journal may collect names, affiliations, contact details, ORCID iDs, account information, submission and review records, correspondence and technical logs needed to operate and secure the journal.

Use and confidentiality

Information is used to manage editorial work, publish accepted articles and metadata, maintain the scholarly record and meet ethical or legal obligations. Access to non-public material is limited to authorized people who require it for journal operations.

Performers and participants

Authors must remove personal, sensitive or culturally restricted information that they are not authorized to publish. Interviews, rehearsal records, photographs, recordings, audience data and community knowledge must be handled according to consent, ethics, performer rights, cultural protocols and applicable law.

Sharing and retention

MPAR does not sell personal information. Limited data may be processed by hosting, DOI, indexing, preservation, email or security services required to run the journal. Editorial records may be retained to document decisions and preserve research integrity.
